Creating a lawn that your neighbors will envy takes time and dedication. If you follow some very basic principles you will have a green lawn in no time. Here are some lawn care tips that will get your lawn in shape for BBQ season:
Mowing
• Mow the grass at a height of 2.5-4 inches.
• Do not set your mower too low. Cutting your grass too short will not
allow your lawn’s roots to grow deep.
• Mowing should be done when the grass is dry. Mowing wet grass can
cause disease.
• Use a high quality mower with a sharp blade.
• Sharpen the mower blades before mowing or at least once every 7-10
uses.
• Leave the clippings on the lawn. It will add nutrient as well will act
as a mulch.
Watering
• Apply water to keep the soil moist.
• Soak your lawn so the water penetrates the soil. Applying water to the
surface makes the grass roots grow very shallow.
• Water when there is need, otherwise do not water.
• Do not over water lawns. This will cause disease, water loss, and
other problems in most lawns.
• Apply water in the early morning.
• Do not water in the evening, this may create problems for the lawn.
Fertilizing
• Use compost to improve the soil structure. You can apply compost at
any time.
• Before seeding, mix compost and fertilizers in with the soil.
• In seeding, use a slow release fertilizer at the time of seeding.
Again apply a fast release fertilizer after the seeds have germinated.
• Use commercial fertilizers which carry all the three major plant
nutrients – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
• Fertilizer rates, application time and application process varies.
• There are different fertilizers available like organic, synthetic,
inorganic, slow release, fast release etc. Use the appropriate
fertilizer for your lawn and region.
• Tests your soil before applying fertilizers.
Overseeding and Replacing Sod
• The best time for over seeding is early fall.
• Important for lawns which get more shade.
• Add compost while overseeding.
• When replacing sod, cut the affected lawn out with a spade or shovel
and create a nice crisp edge before planting the new sod.
• Add fertilizer to newly replaced area.
• After installing the sod, use a soil press or roll it to get contact
with the soil
Aerating
• Aerate your lawn from time to time. Typically once in the fall and
once in the spring.
• Keep checking I the soil to make sure it is ok.
• Use aeration to reduce compactness of soil and to remove the thatch.
• You can use mechanical and/or hand aerators.
Thatching
• Try to thatch at least once per year. Thatch can stunt the growth of
lawn’s and can prevent healthy growth.
• Old thatch is difficult to remove.
• Use aeration to reduce thatch problems.
Pest Management
• Lawn pests need to be managed with organic methods or pesticides.
• You can use mechanical method, cultural method, chemical method or
biological method to control pests.
• One option is to use chemical pesticides to control pests. Make sure
you read the warning labels. You may also want to look at organic
options if you have children or pets.
• While using chemicals, be sure to follow the instructions.
• Follow the recommended dose to avoid toxicity to the grass.
Weeding
• Weeding is very important and should be done in the fall and spring.
• Use pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides to kill the weeds.
• Mulching helps in weed control.
• Do not apply herbicide soon after seeding or after emergence of the
grass seeds.

Having the perfect lawn involves many things. And with those many things to do in taking care of your lawn, would it not be best if there is somewhere a set of guides to help you along? Well look no more, because here are some lawn tips that could be useful to you.
Important Lawn Care Considerations
If you want a healthy and great looking lawn, then lawn care is important. The lawn care tactics you use are as much a part of lawn maintenance as the actual maintenance steps themselves.
So, first up, When you choose the grass for your lawn, make sure it is the right type. The factors that could affect your choice of grass include your location (because you may be living in a dry or wet part of the country).
Your choice of grass can also be affected by that grasses' availability at a particular season and certain planting methods. Your lawn and garden will not be as perfect as you wish it to be if right from the start you didn't prepare adequately.
Guide to Lawn Maintenance
Lawn management requires dedication on your part and good application of the skills you will need, which are not that hard to understand and learn.
One important lawn care necessity is lawn mowing. You cannot just let the grass in your lawn overgrow, can you? When you mow, use a sharp mower so that you would get the job done easily and fast. A sharp lawn mower is also best to avoid young grass seedlings from being uprooted.
Another important lawn care practice is regular and adequate lawn watering. Naturally, if you do not water the grass in your lawn, it will dry up and eventually die. Know the requirements of the grass type you have planted and water accordingly. You may need to water your lawn more during the hot seasons and be careful with timing too.
Another important thing to remember when you take care of your lawn is lawn fertilizing and of course you must know the right fertilizers for your grass. That is why choosing your grass in the first place was important. So, do some research down at your local specialists and decide what you need to do and in what season.
You might also want to take into account insect control and relevant treatment too.
Why Lawn Aeration Works
Aside from that, your lawn may need some aerating from time to time. The thatch - mowed bits and pieces of grass can pack the soil of your lawn as well as block the air from entering. So you might consider that with your lawn management, using a hollow tine fork or other attachments that you might be able to use on your mower.
A lawn scarifier can be found in your garden center, as an attachment or a free-standing piece of kit, often inexpensive and very practical and effective.
Get Those Pesky Lawn Weeds
Lawn weeding is also important. Though your lawn is mainly grass, you do not want other types of grass to be mixed in there. Also use the proper and best lawn equipment you can find to ensure a good job.
In fact, a good idea here is to meander around your lawn, just after you have cut it, with a small knife and cut out the biggest weeds. As you do this frequently the weeds weaken and die off. It's a good investment of time for those bigger weeds.
Lawn care is important, for that beautiful expanse of green you have dreamt about, so make sure to do your best with it.
